As America continues to sink further into economic crisis (as confirmed by new outlooks published today), President Obama reports he is "having a great time" on vacation.

The taxpayer-funded vacation Obama currently enjoys in Martha's Vineyard, playground of the rich and famous, is his 6th vacation THIS YEAR.

A Flagrantly Responsible Conservative

I'm writing this to say just one thing: I like Mike.

That would be Michael Dale Huckabee, former Baptist preacher, former governor of Arkansas, former GOP presidential candidate, current Fox News personality...

The proximate reason I say that is his recent refusal to support a knuckleheaded idea being touted by many of his conservative brethren: altering the 14th Amendment to curtail illegal immigration.

But I could have said it a few months ago when he sided with Arizona Hispanics who feared that state's new immigration law could be used to profile them.

I could have said it two years ago when he dissected the Jeremiah Wright controversy with a sense of nuance and compassion seldom found among conservatives when they speak of race...

And yes, I know what some of you are thinking: I like Mike because he agrees with me.

Actually, he doesn't. Yes, we have points of concurrence. But on any number of issues -- reproductive rights, guns, same sex marriage, HIV/AIDS education -- the distance between us yawns like canyons... [but]...

...Just when you've got him figured as another guy glued to his talking points on the issues that divide and define, he will surprise you by showing evidence of actual thought.

...he will deviate from what his ideological kin are all tonelessly repeating like windup toys and follow conscience to some other conclusion.

...Sometimes you wonder if anyone is still on the country's side. You couldn't prove it by most of what passes for leadership these days. Which is why we never seem to reach national consensus, never seem to find compromise, never do anything except boil with a free floating, self-perpetuating anger.

But Huckabee seems to have the novel idea that it's more important to find answers than win arguments, more important to speak conscience than parrot talking points. That's why, even when I disagree with him, I like Mike.

And why I wish other politicians would take note.

Huckabee Remains 2012 Front-Runner in Iowa

In a new poll, Huckabee takes 22 percent to 18 percent for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. In a slight surprise, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) received 14 percent to take third while former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin placed fourth with 11 percent.

No other candidate scored in double digits.

Huckabee Against Changing 14th Amendment

We've been blogging about - and support - Mike Huckabee's stance on illegal immigration since 2005. Here we are in August 2010 still doing it.

There is a bit of an uproar in the MSM right now over Huckabee's recent statement that he doesn't support changing the 14th Amendment to deny citizenship to those born here.

Whatever Huckabee's reasons are, we agree with him for this reason: The United States of America is the greatest country in the world and every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in freedom with all the opportunity that is available to them. Furthermore, this country does not punish children for the crimes of their parents.

The 14th Amendment has guaranteed birthright citizenship to every child born here since the 1800's - and it has been tested and affirmed by the Supreme Court many, many times.

Huckabee knows this position will put him at odds with the immigration hawks and extremists of the party - but he sticks to his principles.

And that's why we love him.
